Fed: More robberies in NSW but higher murder rate in NT

The Northern Territory has the highest murder rate in the nation, while New South Wales
leads the way in robberies.

Queensland also has the highest rate of sexual assaults.

The study, prepared by the crime prevention branch of the federal attorney-general's
department, highlights a startling diversity of crime rates across Australia.

It says the NT had the country's top murder rate last year at 4.7 killings per 100,000 people.

That was followed by South Australia at 2.7, Western Australia at 2.5, Queensland and
NSW both around 2.1, Victoria on 1.4 and the ACT 0.6.

When it came to robbery, NSW remains top of the list last year, and the ACT is the
nation's burglary and car theft capital.

Queensland has the highest rate of sexual assault at 100.2 per 100,000 people, followed
by the NT, SA, WA, NSW, Victoria, Tasmania then the ACT.
