Home From Hospital, Southminster Life can be hard when you'vejust come out of hospital. This worthwhile project offers support topeople who are over 50 and/or disabled who have recently beendischarged from hospital care. Volunteers lend a helping hand withhousework, shopping, posting letters, ironing and car trips foraround one hour a week for up to four weeks, until the patient hasregained some independence. They also offer a handyman who can helpmake your home safe by putting up rails and moving furniture. Theteam of 30 plus volunteers cover the Chelmsford, Maldon andBraintree areas.
Voting code 001 Friends of St Andrew's Church, Shalford (FOSTAC)These volunteers wish to improve the inside of their church, makingit better suited to performances, concerts and marriages. They'dlike to remove pews, extend the screen between the tower and thenave, and create a multi-purpose room. It's hoped these changes willbring new people into the church, add to the social life of thevillage, raise more funds for the church and conserve energy.Forthcoming events include a Gilbert and Sullivan evening and a hogroast. The Friends have raised thousands for the church since thegroup was founded in 2005. Volunteers have never claimed expenses.Voting code 003 Re-Think Self-Help Art Group, Bocking End Livingwith mental illness can be difficult but this group has allowed its40 members to express themselves through painting and drawing. Thegroup also has an important social aspect and many members have madenew friends. Volunteers Trina (carer) and Jan (artist) haveencouraged members and organised an annual exhibition of their workat Braintree Library. They have also enjoyed fun day trips toColchester Zoo and art galleries. Members have improved not onlytheir art skills, but their self-confidence, too. The group wouldlike funds to hold a workshop. "Without this invaluable group, manyof us would not have made friends," one member commented. Votingcode 005 Braintree Community Transport Team, Braintree For the last11 years, this group of 40 volunteers have helped elderly, frail anddisabled Braintree residents. They drive people to the shops, thetown centre and the doctor's, often using their own cars. The groupmakes more than 51,000 journeys each year, and their only payment isgrateful thanks. Voting code 002 Witham Town Luncheon Club, WithamOld age can be lonely for some but this group provides a lifeline toaround 80 pensioners in the town, boosting their social lives andproviding hot meals twice a week. It's manned by volunteers but theydo have to employ two part-time cooks. As well as meals, the clubhosts popular raffles and volunteers from the Age UK charity popalong on Mondays for advice sessions. The NHS has noted that theclub improves members' health and lives. One member in her 80s hassaid that the club has transformed her life after spending yearsstruggling to bring up her disabled child.
Voting code 004 Mera Resource Centre, Maldon Volunteers at thisdrop-in centre provide a wealth of services to people in the areaincluding internet access, typing, photocopying and letter and CVwriting. They also offer printing, laminating and binding. Manyservices are free but some have a small charge. Residents can learnbasic computer skills for free. Volunteers provide assistance andadvice for those in social housing. The "kind and helpful" staffoffer a friendly ear for those needing a chat. It's open six days aweek. Another resident added: "Were it to close, it would be a greatloss to the town."
